Famous Mason Of The Day Lewis Wallace Lewis "Lew" Wallace was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana. Wallace was a true civil servant, working as a lawyer, governor, American statesman and served his country as a Union general during the American Civil War. Among the many public offices held Wallace were Governor of New Mexico from 1878-1881, and as U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire from 1881-1885. Despite his countless years of service, Wallace is perhaps best known for authoring the 19th century's best selling nobel in America, "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" in 1880. Lew Wallace was Initiated on December 15, 1850 at Fountain Lodge No. 60 in Covington, Indiana, and later affiliated at Montgomery Lodge No. 50 in Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1895.
